Author Interview- Joyce Holmes

Happy Tuesday readers.

To round out March on a high note,
I have author Joyce Holmes and her new book,
Dare to Risk All

Welcome Joyce, it's wonderful to meet you. Tell me three words that describe yourself starting with A, B, and C.
Amiable
Busy
Conscientious

What are your three favorite things?

Family
Animals
Nature

Are you self- published or with a publishing company (if so, which one?)?

I’m fortunate to be published with two publishers, Sweet Cravings Publishing and The Wild Rose Press.

Is there a process you stick to, or do you just write as it hits you?

I fall somewhere in between. Usually I come up with a character or two, and a basic premise, then see where it goes from there. As for my writing process, I always edit as I go along. Each day, before I start writing fresh, I read what I’ve written the day before and do some light edits. Sometimes when I hit a roadblock, I go back and read/edit from the beginning and that either helps get me back into the story or it points out where I headed in the wrong direction.

How much is your character like you?

I certainly don’t have Tessa’s marketing smarts, but we do share several traits, now that I think about it. We’re both diligent and have been under-appreciated at work. We don’t put a lot of stock in our appearance, and we’re both short, although that’s where the similarities in our looks end. We love animals and our dogs are a big part of our family. We believe in happy-ever-after.

When not writing, what can you be found doing?

My hubby and I love to travel as much as we can, and I’m an avid picture taker, which I probably over-share on my blog. We also like to get out into nature, hiking, biking, and our newest sport - kayaking. I’d really love to spend more time with my family, but my three boys have all scattered across this vast country so I don’t see them nearly as much as I want to.

When writing, which do you prefer to write with, computer or paper and pen?

I make lots of notes with pen and paper, but the actual writing is done on my laptop.

BLURB:

Tessa Caldwell’s carefully structured world is thrown into chaos when the handsome stranger she had an uncharacteristic fling with reappears in her life. Ben not only gets the promotion she thought was hers, but is also intent on resuming their physical relationship. Although Tessa’s rational mind insists on a professional association, both her heart and her traitorous body have other ideas. Can her sensible nature possibly win against such temptation?
Memories of the petite blonde with large, blue eyes have haunted Ben Dunham for months. When he transfers to her branch, he anticipates picking up where they left off. Reality doesn’t match memory when the cool and collected lady wants no part of him. If he intends to pursue Tessa, he has to earn her trust. The problem is, Ben carries a dark and dangerous secret. How does he get Tessa to trust him when he can’t trust himself?

Excerpt:

“Morning, Tessa,” Ben and Travis chorused as she came down the hallway toward them the next morning.
She had arrived at least twenty minutes early, so why was Ben already at work? Sharing small talk and coffee with Travis in the hall outside their office. Brownnoser. And he’d effectively stolen the advantage of being the first to settle into the new office.
Ben’s gaze moved coolly, shamelessly, over her body in a deliberately appreciative manner. His sensuous mouth curved into a smile that made her legs go rubbery and had her wishing she’d chosen a pantsuit instead of the curve-clinging wool dress.
Not that she had any actual curves worth clinging to.
“Morning.” She smiled pleasantly at Travis first, then nodded briefly in Ben’s direction and turned her back on him, hoping he wouldn’t follow her into the office.
He did. And he closed the door behind him.
She went to her desk, using it as a barrier between them to help cope with his presence. Her temper tended to subside as quickly as it flared, and yesterday’s outburst already shamed her. After careful consideration, she realized she’d behaved unreasonably toward Ben. Because he was right—he had offered to stop before they’d made love, and she had been the one to convince him otherwise.
Despite not feeling very logical right now, common sense told her she shared in the responsibility for what had happened between them. She needed to put aside her personal feelings and concentrate on work. Because there was no room for personal feelings at the office. Not irritation, or resentment, and definitely not regret or any residual and unwanted desire.
She’d never be oblivious to the attraction of Ben’s sea-deep green eyes and flashing smile, but as far as she was concerned, that would be the extent of it. What had happened on the cruise was attributable to the circumstances, the romantic setting. Nothing more. Trying to continue with that type of behavior here at the workplace would be a recipe for disaster, or at the very least, she’d run the risk of losing her job. She’d always managed to keep her career goals clearly in sight. Now should be no different.
Ben shrugged out of his suit jacket and hung it across the back of his desk chair. He paced restlessly around the room, then moved to the window and stood in front of it with his hands in his pants pockets. Tessa surreptitiously watched his every move, enjoying and appreciating his casual grace and masculine beauty. As she grew aware of the direction her thoughts had headed, she irritably stopped herself and focused on her desktop instead. The photo of her and Lauren lay face down in the middle of her desk, and she placed it in its usual spot at the far left corner.
“The fellow who moved your desk and filing cabinet said something about hooking up your computer later this morning.”
“That’ll be fine,” Tessa muttered as she reached out and nudged the picture frame a fraction of an inch to the right.
Ben crossed the room to the computer table. From where she sat, Tessa caught a whiff of a sensuous blend of spice and citrus as he passed her desk. She swallowed. Hard.
“I take it this was Ed Hardy’s computer and now it’s for my use?” he asked after a moment.
“I guess,” Tessa agreed. Needing to concentrate on something other than how sexy Ben smelled, she dug in her drawer for her appointment book to see what she had on her schedule for the day. Morris wanted her to clean up any outstanding work by the end of the week, leaving her free to focus on new accounts with Ben. She had been developing some ideas to pitch for spec work, which were almost in the final stages and wouldn’t take long to finish once her computer was back up and running.
Ben walked over to her desk, folded both arms across his chest and gazed down at her. “Ya know, this polite stranger thing is getting pretty old.” When she looked up, he braced his arms on the edge of the desk and leaned in. “Are we talking to one another or what?”
Tessa dropped the book and flattened into her chair. That now familiar breathless feeling constricted her throat. His stance, his closeness, gave her an exhilarated, restless sensation. Her body reacted to the message she read in his eyes, little jolts of desire mingling with spurts of resentment. The treacherous way her body responded to him embarrassed her, and if she read his smug expression correctly, he knew exactly what effect he had on her.
No matter what or how she actually felt, her pride demanded that she prove this impertinent man wrong.

Author Interview- Misty Simon

Happy Monday readers.

I am so excited about today's guest and was beyond thrilled
when she agreed to be guest, because I truly LOVE her writing.

Please join me in welcoming author Misty Simon to the blog and be sure to read on as I give a review of her Ivy Morris Mysteries at the end.

It's so nice having you here Misty,
tell me three words that describe yourself starting with A, B, and C.
Affable, Banter-y, Chipper

What are your three favorite things?
Thunderstorms, Reading and Writing

Are you self- published or with a publishing company (if so, which one?)?
I publish with The Wild Rose Press and have two novellas out with Harlequin

Is there a process you stick to, or do you just write as it hits you?

HA! Don’t let any of my friends read this! I do try to stick to a process. It doesn’t always work but I make the effort J I mind map the concept of the book first, then longhand scene ideas. I then try to put them into some order, usually on note cards and from there I create a timeline of sorts. It gives me a place to look to see if there are plot holes. There usually are and then I have to go back and fix them. At this point I usually put it aside, write the last book I mapped out and then come back fresh to fix things. I plot the next one, write the one I fixed and rinse and repeat.

How much is your character like you?

More than anyone will ever know…

Music is a big influence on my writing. I have certain songs that inspire each chapter, or the whole book. What helps to inspire you?

I also listen to music when I write. I don’t tend to look for certain songs as I try not to pay attention to the lyrics or I end up writing them. Believe me, it’s happened and then I only found them in editing. But I have certain genres or bands I listen to depending on the mood of the scene I’m working on.

Will there be more books in your series, or can you tell us about any previous books?

There will be more books! This is the third in the previously published Ivy Morris Mysteries series and I have five total that will come out and then it’s on to new ones! I’m very excited to bring Ivy back. The first is tentatively called Hoedown Showdown and I’m having a blast with it!

(This author is doing her happy dance. I will be first in line to get my copy!!!!!)

When writing, which do you prefer to write with, computer or paper and pen?

Depending on which stage I’m at I use them all and highlighters and colored pencils and markers and notecards. Really I’m just a terror in any stationery store.

Ivy Morris never thought she'd be walking her new stepmother down the aisle to her father. Not a flawless event, because, really, when is anything in Ivy's life flawless? At least she avoids tripping. It's the reception that has the flaw.  The wedding singer nearly chokes to death on a glass of water, and then Ivy's sister finds something unexpected in the parking lot.

And that's not all. Something odd is going on in the sleepy little town of Martha's Point — for some reason, no female under the age of fifty can keep her hands off Ivy's boyfriend. Ivy's little shop enjoys a tremendous increase in business as those women keep running in to buy more new sexy lingerie, but her heart is anything but happy.

What will it take to solve these mysteries? Is Ivy up to it? Well, she's about to find out.

Excerpt:

“I wonder what’s up with Shelley.” Bella freshened her lipstick, which looked like it had been chewed off. Had she done that herself, or had her new squeeze, Officer Jared, done it for her? I really envied her freedom to do whatever she wanted whenever the mood struck her.
“It’s like an epidemic today,” I said. “Some woman at the dress shop sewed up most of my dress wrong and I could barely fit into it. When Sarah, the owner, finally got hold of me, she gave it a couple of tugs and, voila, it fit like a dream. I don’t get it.”
“I wouldn’t worry. Let’s get you taken care of as best we can and get back out there. I left Jared with a very strained expression on his face, and I don’t want it to go away before I’m good and ready.”
Bella, the eternal sexpot. I wished I could call myself the kettle.
Instead, we went back out to the table with my hair pulled into a messy but chic ponytail. Thank goodness Bella had a pair of earrings in her purse that hung almost to my shoulder. They made the stubby ponytail look a little less fourth grade and more fancy college co-ed. I hadn’t done anything with the degree I had received other than be an admin assistant, but I could look the part, I guessed.
When we arrived back at the table, Ben rose from his chair and helped me into mine. He could be a gentleman when he wanted to be. Not that he was a complete jerk at other times, but he did have his moments of over-the-top arrogance.

Review for Ivy Morris Mysteries

First, let me start by saying I am a tremendously HUGE fan of Misty Simon’s, Ivy Morris Mysteries Books. (As if you already couldn’t tell by my excitement). Don’t get me wrong, her other books-Making Room at the Inn and What’s Life Without the Sprinkles?- are all equally fabulous, but there is something special about Ivy Morris.

Misty has crafted such a wonderfully vibrant character, that while I’m reading, I find myself many times wanting to jump up and yell, “You go girl! That’s my Ivy!”

We first meet Ivy in Book One, Poison Ivy where she’s been given a chance to find herself. I won’t spoil it for those of you who haven’t read it yet, but I will say Ivy moves to a new town, where she’s not well received. Finding a supportive new friend in hairstylist Bella, who bring a little color into Ivy’s brown life and catching the attention of town stud, Ben, Ivy’s life is looking up. Until one of her new friends is murdered, thrusting Ivy into the role of detective.
A logophile (that means lover of words- I had to look it up), Ivy has a grand appreciation for seldom used words and I literally feel like every time I open one of her books, that my vocabulary expands by leaps and bounds.

Book Two, The Wrong Drawers keeps the ball rolling when Ivy is framed in the murder of Bella’s high school friend and things between the besties become a little rocky. To make matters worse, Ivy’s dad is playing interference where her romantic life is concerned.
Now, not only does Ivy have to prove her innocence, she has to contend with a raging case of the bedroom blues!

Something’s fishy in Martha’s Point, VA in Book Three, Something old, Something dead, and once again Ivy Morris finds herself smack in the middle of it.
A dead wedding singer, a covert town plan to sabotage her relationship with Ben, and a gorgeous stranger who makes Ivy think twice all make for a fast-paced and fun read that will leave you wanting more. And I am so glad there are more to come.

Side note: I read Book Two and Three in one sitting!!!!!

Each book gets a rousing 5 hearts. Do yourself a favor and grab your copies today.

Author Interview- Beth Caudill

Happy Sunday readers!

Bringing us her new book, Enchantress' Destiny is author Beth Caudill.

    Welcome Beth.
Can you tell me three words that describe yourself starting with A, B, and C.
Absolute, Book-lover, Celestial

What are your three favorite things?
Cut flowers, silver and books

Are you self- published or with a publishing company (if so, which one?)?
I have three short stories published with The Wild Rose Press and three novellas that are self-published.

Is there a process you stick to, or do you just write as it hits you?
My writing process starts with pictures of the hero, heroine and villain and defining their basic characteristics.  Then I find examples of floorplans if needed and any initial research.  After that I start writing.  I may know a few plot points but mostly I write whatever pops into my head for the characters.

Music is a big influence on my writing. I have certain songs that inspire each chapter, or the whole book. What helps to inspire you?
I find a lot of inspiration in pictures, particularly fantasy art since I write about magic and paranormal creatures. I do create playlists for each story  - a mix of new age, classical,  movie theme music, and pop songs.  I'll pick songs that reflect emotions for my characters.

When not writing, what can you be found doing?

Currently, I'm homeschooling both of my sons so a lot of my days are spent organizing and helping with their classwork. I used to cross stitch but now I create chainmaille jewelry and sell pieces under the name Starlight Falls Designs.

Favorite item of clothing in your closet?

I'm not much of a fashionista but I do love my soft cotton nightgown.

 Favorite writer, book?
It's hard to pick one because there are four or five authors I'll reread if I need a good comfort story.  One of my favorites is Ilona Andrews and her Kate Daniels series.

Is there anything else you'd like the reader to know?
While Enchantress' Destiny is Book 2 in the series, the story can be read standalone. The main characters do not appear in Book 1, Healer's Fate, and are only connected because they exist in the same world of Arilase.

Title:  Enchantress' Destiny

One dark curse, two elves and a destiny neither could escape.
Disregarded by her betrothed, elven princess Clairessa Bellehaven analyzes spell books and dreams of finding someone to share her life. Betrayed by her unfaithful witch boyfriend, she convinces herself a single night with another elf will do no harm. Except the Goddess has a plan and Clairessa will have to fight to save the man who seized her heart and refused to let her go.
Clan prince Rowe Calder arrived in Wildeloch to settle problems with his family's business. What he found was the one elf he'd spent his life avoiding. His bondmate. The woman destined to bring about his death. Now he must find a way to keep his family safe when the dark elf comes to claim his soul.
Will a love long denied be strong enough to save them when darkness seeks retribution?

Excerpt

Claire watched him walk to the bar. The view of his back, particularly his ass, was almost as enticing to stare at as the front. His long amber honey hair swished behind him and his scent, the tangy zip of orange, hung in the air like the fragrance from her orange-scented geranium. On his way back, blue, green and gold colored eyes held her gaze, and her insides quivered with nervous energy. He was a delicious sweet, mixed with the allure of a hunter's confidence, like the tree lynx in search of prey.
A moment of indecision gripped her. Dating an elf would be problematic with the betrothal contract hanging over her head. But he tempted every part of her and their liaison would be fleeting. For one night, she could revel in the touch of another elf and embrace the wildness he called within her.
He returned with a cone-shaped glass, filled with a white liquor colored with the faintest tinge of blush and placed it in front of her. She twirled the toothpick with a winterberry on the end and raised an eyebrow at him.
"I didn't order this."
"It's a club special." His eyes and smile dared her to turn him down. "I hear they're very popular with the female guests. Surely tonight is a time for experimentation?"
Accepting his lure, she drained half the concoction. Tartness exploded on her tongue and burned her throat, but she was never one to back away. Staring into his eyes, she licked her lips. "Delicious."
His quiet moan sent a distinctly feminine thrill through her. Knowing a man appreciated her attributes brightened her mood.
Group laughter and the stamp of many feet heralded the arrival of at least ten people. Quickly, the remaining tables filled and they could hardly hear each other above the din. Her spirits took a downturn with the numerous arrivals. She'd enjoyed the quiet privacy.
A loud clatter disrupted every conversation as a lion shifter shoved a satyr into a table and it splintered under his weight. The goat-man rose, stomped his hooves and laughed, oblivious to the unhappy stares directed his way.
"Perhaps you'd like to take this elsewhere?" Rowe whispered in her ear.

Author Interview- Ashantay Peters

Happy Saturday readers.
What better way to spend today than curled up with your favorite beverage and
Ashantay Peter's brand spankin' new book,
Pipe Dreams.

Thank you, Angela, for hosting me on your blog today. I am pleased to be here!
I'm so happy you could be here with us today.
To get us started, can you tell me three words that describe yourself starting with A, B, and C.

A - Atlantis - parts of me have sunken, and many brain cells have disappeared.
B - Backtalk - my characters often voice the ideas I mute in myself.
C - Comedy

What are your three favorite things?

Reading, gardening, volunteering at my library

Are you self- published or with a publishing company (if so, which one?)?

I am published with The Wild Rose Press. Lovely people - great company.

Was there any particular inspiration for your characters or story?

My latest release, Pipe Dreams, was inspired by an incident that happened to me many years ago. I kept smelling pipe tobacco in my home and couldn't find the source. Drove me nuts!

How much is your character like you?

All of my characters have little bits of me.  Or is it that I have bits of them? Either way, I believe in sharing. Old hippie Sally is more like me than Abby, however.

Music is a big influence on my writing. I have certain songs that inspire each chapter, or the whole book. What helps to inspire you?

While I don't listen to music when I write - whole song lyrics get transcribed into my manuscript before I know it - I do get inspiration from classic rock. I'll be pondering a plot twist when a song comes on the car radio and voila! I have my answer.

What is the ultimate goal you have for your career?

To make people laugh and, if lucky, to help a reader recognize themselves in a character and find the courage to change what they no longer can accept about themselves.

Describe your perfect day?

My perfect day is filled with laughter, good food, long-time friends, and wine. Plenty of wine.

Abigail Stephens left her past behind or did she? When she moved to Blue Peak, she expected to find sanctuary and a new start. Instead, her new home includes a hippie, a ghost with a mission, and a sexy coffee house owner who undermines her plans.

Carlos Young quit teaching when his fiancée left him for another professor. He’s avoided dating, but his mother’s demand for grandchildren is unceasing and more attractive once he meets Abby.

She resists his overtures...for now. Can an intrusive mother, a reticent ghost, and a run-down house bring Abby and Carlos together or will they continue to live pipe dreams?

Excerpt

“So are you the new owner of this wreck?”
Her hands clenched, along with her jaw. “I’m the proud owner of what will soon be a lovely home.”
He snorted. “You planning to have this in shape any time before winter? Because from where I’m standing, you’ll need more than a mop.”
Abigail’s ears heard echoes of Rich. “I have power tools, and I know how to use them. You have an issue with that?”
“No, I don’t have an issue. You’ve got work ahead of you. Just sayin’. I guess you’ll be hiring a crew for the big stuff, right?”
Abigail threw her shoulders back. This guy sounded exactly like Rich. Bossy. “I can handle it.” She’d already sub-contracted the larger jobs, but that wasn’t his business.
His mouth drew into a tight line, his hands fisted on his hips. “Sorry to bother you. I stopped because it looked like you might need a hand. Guess I misunderstood.”
Dropping his hands, Carlos turned to leave, looking back with a frown. “Good luck with this place. Come on, Henry, we’re not needed here.”
Henry paused, allowing her to ruffle his fur. He broke into a run, following the pissed-off man. An imp on her shoulder prodded her to call after him, “Bye, Henry. You can come visit anytime.” Sotto voce she added, “But leave your human home.”
The dog’s owner kept walking with his shoulders up around his chin.
“Men,” she huffed under her breath. “Just a bunch of know-it-all jackasses. And the good-looking ones are the worst.”

Author Interview- Marlow Kelly

Happy Wednesday Readers, it's Humpday!!!!
Please join with me in welcoming back author Marlow Kelly as she shares her new book,
A Woman of Love, with us and answers a few questions.

Be sure to read all the way through as Marlow is offering a Rafflecopter Giveaway!!!

Tell me three words that describe yourself starting with A, B, and C.

Atypical – I suppose this word applies to everyone. We are all unique, unusual and peculiar in our own way. (Some of us are more peculiar than others.)
Babbler  - I hate that I do this, but I can’t seem to help it. I babble when I’m nervous.
Curvy – This has always applied to me, even when I was young and thin. Of course I didn’t appreciate my curves back then, but now I can tell my daughters that women are supposed to have curves, enjoy them.

What are your three favorite things?

Chocolate
Chocolate
&
Chocolate

Are you self- published or with a publishing company (if so, which one?)?

I’m fortunate enough to be published through the Wild Rose Press. To be honest when I wrote my three novellas I thought I would have to self-publish them. I didn’t know of any  publishers who released shorter works, but then a friend told me to submit my work to The Wild Rose Press and they accepted. (Even though it was over a year ago I’m still doing the happy dance over that one.)

Is there a process you stick to, or do you just write as it hits you?

As an author I’m a work in progress. I wrote the novellas to learn how to rewrite and edit my work. Now I’m learning how to plot. The main characters come to me fully formed with names and everything. They are who they are, but what they are doing, why they are doing it, and where they are going is often a mystery.
I’m developing a plotting process that works for me. I know certain plot points have to hit at certain parts of the story to make it effective, but getting it all sorted out and organized is a challenge.

Music is a big influence on my writing. I have certain songs that inspire each chapter, or the whole book. What helps to inspire you?

Music, walking, and research. If I need to develop action scenes then I listen to Epic Score while I walk. For those of you who have never heard of Epic Score. They write action score music for movies. You can listen to a sample on their website.
When I need to picture an emotional scene or a love scene I go with Enya.
Research helps develop all the ideas and images I get when walking and listening to music. Research can spark the idea or fan the flame.

Describe your perfect day?

5:00am Coffee
5:30am Uninterrupted writing time  - at least three hours
8:30am Breakfast with my kids
9:30am More coffee with friends, oh and maybe something sweet to go with it.
11:00am Massage for at least an hour, maybe longer.
A nice lunch with hubby followed by coffee and more sweet treats. (I only get cakes and cookies on a Saturday, every other day they’re a no – no.)
More writing in the afternoon
Dinner in a nice restaurant with my family.
A Family movie night
Reading time with a glass of wine.

When writing, which do you prefer to write with, computer or paper and pen?

I used to write with pen and paper and then type it all up on the computer, but these days I just use my laptop. Although, there are times when I’m stuck, I pick up a pen and paper and just write whatever comes into my head without censoring it. It can be a great way to unblock the mind.

Can Annabel escape a man who has the ability to control her with a gentle kiss?

Blurb

When her dissolute husband insists that Lady Annabel Peters bed one of his villainous cohorts to repay a gambling debt, she is scandalized. But she is forced to agree because he controls every aspect of her life.
A physically and emotionally crippled war hero, James Drake has retreated from society. At the request of his brother, he manipulates events so he can interrogate Annabel, a woman he thinks may be part of a ring of thieves.
Neither of them count on an instant and overwhelming attraction. James may now believe Annabel but she suspects her husband plans to kill her. As one of her husband’s friends, James is not to be trusted.
Yet how can she escape a man who has the ability to control her with a gentle kiss?

Excerpt

Lady Annabel Peters sat in the open-top carriage and realized she had left it too late. She should have escaped yesterday.

“Really, Annabel, I don’t want you to give your left eye. All I’m asking is that you go in there and do what comes naturally.” Lord Elliott Peters, her husband of two months, sat opposite her, smoothing his waistcoat against his flat, toned abdomen. A lock of blond hair fell across his brow, accentuating his startling blue eyes. He claimed all he had to do was crook his finger, and besotted society women swooned, but she couldn’t imagine it. His grotesque personality obliterated any physical beauty he possessed.

The warm summer breeze touched her face. She inhaled the scent of grass and honeysuckle. Frogs sang somewhere in the distance, and crickets chirped, a sure sign it was going to be a warm night. She looked out at the passing Berkshire countryside, and wondered how anything this ugly could happen on such a perfect summer evening.

“It is not natural for a married woman to bed a man who is not her husband.” She struggled to breathe; a vise tightened around her chest.

“You must be joking. Women do it all the time. That’s how they entertain themselves. You didn’t believe we would be faithful to each other for the rest of our lives, did you? What a ridiculous notion.”

The thought of copulating with Elliott was horrific enough. Now he wanted her to sleep with his friends, too. Bile rose in her throat at the idea of having to endure another man like her husband. He was totally amoral, and thought nothing of sleeping with a friend’s wife. He undoubtedly took pleasure in it. He never controlled his lust. If he saw a woman he wanted, he took her by any means possible.
