Author Interview- Linda Pennell

Happy Monday readers.
Please welcome author Linda Pennell to the blog and join with us as she shares her new book, Casablanca: Appointment at Dawn
and gives up a glimpse at a few of her other wonderful books.

Tell me three words that describe yourself starting with A, B, and C.
Adventurous
Benevolent
Competent

What are your three favorite things?
Singing and music in general,
especially, but not limited to, classical including symphonic, opera, and choral.
Loved ones with two legs or four legs.
Anything with a history, whether shabby or chic.

Are you self- published or with a publishing company (if so, which one?)?
I am published through Soul mate Publishing and The Wild Rose Press.

What for you is the best part of writing? What is the worst?
As an author of historical fiction, I love the research into lesser known events/characters and playing the adult version of my favorite childhood game, Let's Pretend, that writing allows me.
My least favorite thing about the publishing world is the massive amount of time that PR takes, which robs me of writing time. There does not seem to be a happy way around it, however.

What is the ultimate goal you have for your career?
My personal goal is to publish at least one novel per year until that no longer brings a sense of joy or becomes boring. Researching and writing for me are entertaining and bring me a lot of pleasure.

When not writing, what can you be found doing?
When not writing, I can be found singing soprano I with the Texas Master Chorale, substituting as an administrator for my  local school district, and volunteering with my church and local arts organizations.

16. If you could spend the day with any celebrity, who would it be?
I suppose most people might not consider this person a celebrity in the traditional sense, but in the world of choral music, he is a rock star. Morton Lauridsen has composed some of the most beautiful music it has been my privilege to sing. Here is his O Magnum Mysterium:

and his Lux Aeterna:

These are among the most beautiful pieces of music from a living composer, in my opinion. I would love to spend a day with the man who is capable of creating such beauty.

When writing, which do you prefer to write with, computer or paper and pen?
I use Scrivener for composing my manuscript and for summarizing my research and plot/outline notes. Occasionally I still use paper and pen when I am in draft form for the notes, etc.

Will seven days be enough time to save the Allied war effort and the girl he loves?

Sarah Barrett, U.S. Army R.N., is finished with wartime romance. Determined to protect her recently broken heart, she throws all of her time and energy into caring for her patients, but when she is given a coded message by a mysterious dying civilian, she is sucked into a vortex of danger and intrigue that threatens her very survival. The one person who can help Sarah is Kurt Heinz, a man with too many secrets to be trusted.

Author Interview- Peggy Jaeger

Hey, hey, readers. Thursday is upon us and Friday is just around the corner.
To help celebrate, I've got my good friend Peggy Jaeger
on the blog today and we're talking her upcoming release,
First Impressions.

Tell me three words that describe yourself starting with A, B, and C.

Assertive, Ballsy, Contemplative

What are your three favorite things?
Writing, Reading, Cooking

Are you self- published or with a publishing company (if so, which one?)?
Traditionally published – The Wild Rose Press

Was there any particular inspiration for your characters or story?

Yes. I knew after I wrote There’s No Place Like Home, I wanted to explore Moira’s twin brother, Padric, further. He has a womanizing reputation in their hometown and I wanted to write a male character who is misunderstood –as Pat certainly is. Yes, he’s handsome and successful, and yes, he’s dated a lot of women. But as he asserts in First Impressions, he’s never had a torrid break up with a girl, never left a girl heart broken and hurting, never gotten a girl pregnant, and truthfully, never fallen in love. He admits he’s been in serious lust a few times, but never love. The reason he dates so many women is simple for him: he’s looking for The One. The old saying you have to kiss a lot of frogs before you find your prince, holds for men, too, in Pat’s thinking. Many male characters, especially alpha males, are written without a great deal of emotional depth. I wanted the reader to know why Pat was the way he was, why he acted the way he did, and how he felt about falling in love for the first – and last – time.

What is the ultimate goal you have for your career?

Anyone who knows me knows the one part of being a writer I don’t really cherish is the endless marketing and self-promotion. My ultimate goal is to be able to have a full time public relations/publicity/social media maven employed just for me. That way I will never have to self promote unless I want to and can spend all the time I want on just writing.

Will there be more books in your series, or can you tell us about any previous books?

There are two more planned – one is in final edits for me right now -and they are both pre-quals to Skater’s Waltz where we meet the original MacQuire Women – Carly, Tiffany’s mom, and her sister Serena, Moira and Pat’s mom. If I can come up with a good enough story line for myself, there will be a 6th and that will be Tiffany’s daughter Alaina’s story.  I actually wrote Carly and Serena’s stories first, then Skater’s Waltz, but the story published first was Skater.

When not writing, what can you be found doing?

Cooking and painting, mostly. I’ve never met a recipe I was scared to try and I have over 100 cook books in my home. I love to craft paint and decoupage. I’m a very good copier –in a former life I might have been a forger – and I like finding paintings and replicating them on craft items likes boxes and frames.

If you could spend the day with any celebrity, who would it be?

Hands down, Nora Roberts. I want to follow her around and pick her brain about all aspects of writing and publishing. I want to know what her process is first hand and have some of her magnificent work ethic rub off on me.

Exciting things going on right now in my writer’s world

FIRST IMPRESSIONS releases on 9/23/15

Blurb:

Family Practice Doctor Clarissa Rogers’ first impression of Padric Cleary is biased and based on gossip. The handsome, charming veterinarian is considered a serial dater and commitment-phobic by his family and most of the town. Relationship shy, Clarissa refuses to lose her heart to a man who can’t pledge himself to her forever.

Pat Cleary, despite his reputation, is actually looking for "The One." When he does give his heart away, he wants it to be for life. With his parent’s marriage as his guidebook, he wants a woman who will be his equal and soul mate in every way.

Can Pat convince everyone – including Clarissa – she’s the only woman for him?

Excerpt:
“Have you ever been friends with a girl before?”
“Have a beer and shoot some pool friends? Or the kind with benefits?”
When she laughed out loud, he tried to think what was so funny.
“Have you ever just been friends with a girl without sex mixed into the equation?”
“Not since I was sixteen,” he admitted and felt his neck heat.
             “That’s what I thought.”
             “Why?”
She cocked her head. “It’s no secret I’m attracted to you. I think the way I just responded to you proves it. But I don’t jump into bed with a man just because I’m attracted to him.”
“So, what’s being friends got to do with anything?”
Clarissa sighed and leaned a hip against the doorjamb.
“I’ve been hearing about your reputation with women since I moved here, and I’m not looking to be the flavor of the week, Pat.”
He stared at her for a second as hurt washed through him. “You don’t sugar coat things do you?”
She reached out and gripped his forearm. Her hand felt so good against his skin, he instinctively laid his own over it. He swore he saw a flash of lightning spark from underneath his fingers.
“I don’t mean to insult you, but I’m trying to build a professional reputation in this town and I don’t want to do anything to give gossip mongers any fuel.”
            “And dating me would?”
“Dating anyone would. This is a small town and everyone knows one another. But like I said, you have this rep where women are concerned.”
“I’m not going to apologize for liking women, Clarissa. I’m a guy.”
“That, you are.” Her lips split into a huge smile.

There are attributes of myself probably in all of them.

What is the ultimate goal you have for your career?
To be a mutiple-published bestselling author

Finding the perfect treasures for the people I love.

When not writing, what can you be found doing?

Andy Cohen AFTER being featured as a main guest and his promoting my favorite penned book ----which is coming soon so stay tuned for it: Having Fun with Mr. Wrong.

Book Blurb:

Felicity Burgess is no stranger to tough breaks in business and in love. And she deals with them very well on her own. She has no choice. After the sudden death of her parents, Felicity must support herself and her sister. She fights her way up the ranks at a local television network and directs her own-inspired teen reality show. Despite raving reviews, the network won’t give her the title or the pay of director. Or a shot at running with her new show.
Her sister is a trouble-bound teen and lands in a hospital due to a weather related car accident. While in the emergency waiting room, Felicity’s idol, Hollywood’s notoriously confirmed bachelor, film star, and entrepreneur walks in: Maxwell Marx. Felicity pitches her new reality show to him. Little did she know her life-long heartthrob would become her supervisor. Working close with Max, she sees a side to him no one knows. She wants to break down the barriers and reveal the man Max truly is but denies exists. She’s determined to break through, only she doubts he’d ever let her.
#
Max is happy with his carefree existence, much as the tabloids portray. He plays up to the role of the unattainable lady’s man better than any script he agrees to take. The façade works just fine until he meets Felicity who wows him with her new reality TV show proposal. So much so, he convinces his network executive buddy to take on the project. But Felicity also taps into something deeper in him. A place he’s purposely protected from any woman to penetrate. He enjoys Felicity’s company, and hopes to keep her at bay, yet she threatens to unravel his protective cocoon he spun out of the pain from his past. A pain he doesn’t intend to face again.
Should he stay in his safe world of single living or risk losing the one girl who could complete his life?

Book Excerpt:

“Wait. I thought you looked familiar. I just read about you in The Hollywood Reporter. Nice article about your work.”
Felicity felt her face burn with embarrassment. He’d read about her! “Yes. That’s me. I’m flattered you saw it.”
“I like to see local talent get ahead. I’m impressed with your tenacity in fighting against the brass in Hollywood. What was it the article said? That’s right, you’re a savant.”
Heat flashed in her chest“Yeah, I had to look that one up myself. But, I’m not exactly playing in the big leagues.”
“You’re getting there.” He wiggled his eyebrows.
Felicity could feel the flush run to her cheeks. “I do have an idea for a new reality series . . .”
“I read a little about it in the article. Tell me more.”
He seemed genuinely interested.
“I have an idea for a new show. It’s a step-up from the usual gossip, drama-ridden stuff.” Felicity took a deep breath and waited for the right words to formulate in her mind. “What if there were a series played by executive women who were on the fast track building their careers while juggling family responsibilities or a vivacious social schedule with a super-charged sex life? I envision the show to have just enough edge to give today’s hard-working professionals a chance to escape from their daily challenges.”
“Sound interesting. Have you pitched it to Applaud!?”
“First, they don’t think I’m seasoned enough to have my own show. Second, they’re fully booked. The established franchises have taken all of the prime TV slots. There’s simply no room.”
“Yeah, but I’m sure each franchise has a certain shelf life. Like everything else in television.”
“Maybe.”
Max seemed to be contemplating something.
Guilt pulled at her heart as her thoughts returned to her sister in surgery. The timing is way off. Too bad, she’d met Max under such unfortunate circumstances.
Then the dratted interruption occurred. “Sir, the doctor would like to see you about Ms. Hernandez.”
Max stood but took a moment to slip Felicity his card.
She scrambled to locate her own and pressed it to his hand.
“Why don’t you give me a call? We’ll meet for lunch.” He scurried to the awaiting attendant and glanced back. “Hope your sister’s okay.”
Then he disappeared behind the open door.
Did she just have a chat with Maxwell Marx? Did he really give her his business card? She stared at it and read it repeatedly:
Maxwell Marx, Actor, Entrepreneur.
She’d love to take their discussion further—professionally and personally.
Her dream!
Relax, girl. He was probably just being polite.

Author Interview- Debra Doggett

Happy Wednesday readers!
Please welcome author Debra Doggett to the blog today as she introduces her latest book,
Bone of my Bones.
(Lovin' that awesome title!)

Welcome Debra.
Tell me three words that describe yourself starting with A, B, and C.

Absentminded (I lose my glasses all the time), Bookworm (my family claimed I missed all the good sites on vacations because my nose was in a book) and Curious.

What are your three favorite things?

Rain on my roof, being alone in a crowd and wandering with no set plan.

Are you self- published or with a publishing company (if so, which one?)?

I am published with The Wild Rose Press. They are amazing.

Was there any particular inspiration for your characters or story?

I love funny zombie movies, especially Shaun of the Dead. When he keeps his friend chained in the garage at the end, I wondered what it would be like to have a rather amiable zombie rambling around while you tried to accomplish something. Of course, Eddie isn't all that amiable, which keeps things interesting.

Music is a big influence on my writing.
I have certain songs that inspire each chapter, or the whole book. What helps to inspire you?

Music will do it sometimes, although I don't listen to music when I write. Listening to a song or watching a film often gives me ideas. But the greatest number of ideas for me comes from people. I love to people watch.

What’s the one thing you would do if you could be your character for a day?

Get Matthias into bed.

Will there be more books in your series, or can you tell us about any previous books?

Yes, there will be more. Bone of My Bones is the first series I've done and I'm looking forward to doing a lot of stories about Rose and what happens to her.

Favorite writer, book?

I don't think I could ever pick a favorite, because there are always new books to choose from. I have two that I'm going to throw out here, both because of pretty much the same reasons: Jenny Lawson's Let's Pretend This Never Happened and Amanda Palmer's The Art of Asking. They are memoirs and not fiction, but they are two of the most honest books I've ever read. Plus Jenny Lawson's is one of the funniest. She is a hilarious writer and will keep you laughing so hard you have tears running down your face. And Amanda's will make you dream big.

 Blurb:

Rose DeSalvo has had better days. Not many but a few. Especially since she left her cheating husband Eddie behind. But Eddie has turned up again to wreck havoc in her life. This time, though, he's buried among her prize roses. Rose knows she's got to find out who killed Eddie and get him back to the scene of the crime before she can be accused of his murder. That's the reason she suddenly finds herself with a dangerously hot necromancer, a zombie ex-husband and a wild assortment of people who seem to know far more about her than she does about them. If she could only get them to tell her what she needs to know before she runs out of time, she just might uncover not only Eddie's murderer but her own destiny.

Excerpt:
There was something about the etched design in the faded cowhide, sort of a scripted “E” all fancied up, that looked all too familiar.
“Hey, those are Eddie’s boots. Whoa!” With the aid of the side of the house, Leon got to his feet and peered at me with bloodshot eyes.
“What?” I kicked at the dirt with my slipper, trying to push enough of it aside to get a better view.
            “You bumped him off.”
“What are you babbling about?” I shined the light around the edge of the hole Leon had dug. They really did look like Eddie’s boots. Please, please, please, don’t let the rest of him be in them.
“You bumped Eddie off, didn’t you?”

Author Interview- Katherine McDermott

Whoo Hooo! It's Friday! And that means there's no better time to grab a new book and relax.
Please join me in welcoming Author Katherine McDermott to the blog and be sure to check out her new book, HIDING

Tell me three words that describe yourself starting with A, B, and C.
Artistic, brainy, corny

What are your three favorite things?
My husband, my grandchildren, my kids and yes, in that order, sorry kids : (

Are you self- published or with a publishing company (if so, which one?)?

Both. I have two children’s books that are self- published: Les Petits Gardes a picture book and The Underwear Tree, a chapter book primarily for girls.
Margie Clary and I wrote The South Carolina Lighthouses published by Arcadia Publishing and All Work, All Play is a book of actitivities for career counselors published by Marco.

What for you is the best part of writing? What is the worst?

The best part is getting into another world and another person’s mind.  I especially like doing research on places I have not been. With the internet it’s like taking a mini-vacation on the web.  The worst part is editing and rewriting. You better really like your story because before you finish, you will have read it over and over and over . . .

Is there a process you stick to, or do you just write as it hits you?

I had to learn to write anywhere anytime, the doctor’s waiting room, jotting down an idea on a napkin at a restaurant, etc. Life is so hectic that you have to use idle minutes to accomplish anything.

Was there any particular inspiration for your characters or story?

The inspiration for Hiding was a real hotel in Paris with a courtyard that was just begging for a mural.

How much is your character like you?

Somewhat, we both enjoy art and painting. We both like to travel. But fortunately, I have not experience an abusive boyfriend though in my years as a high school guidance counselor I did hear about them from others.

Music is a big influence on my writing. I have certain songs that inspire each chapter, or the whole book. What helps to inspire you?

I like music as well and your idea is intriguing. But no, I did not have specific songs though Phantom of the Opera certainly resonates in parts of my story. I like ballroom dance so I did throw in some tango and waltz.

What’s the one thing you would do if you could be your character for a day?

Enjoy those Alpine views in Breil sur Roya

What is the ultimate goal you have for your career?

Just want to keep writing. I am challenging myself right now with a historical romance word count 70,000.  That’s almost twice as long as Hiding, but I do love history.

Describe your perfect day?

Leisurely breakfast with good coffee, teaching a freshman English class at Trident Technical College, working on a novel, seeing my grandkids and a little painting after supper. I find that when I am stymied writing and I go paint for a while, the writer’s block lifts.

As the holidays approach, what traditions do you have?

I like to sing in the church choir and make gingerbread houses with my grandchildren. We go to candlelight Christmas Eve service.

Will there be more books in your series, or can you tell us about any previous books?

Not with the same characters. Wild Rose is currently looking at Dead Right, another suspense novel set totally in Charleston. It involves and female assistant medical examiner and a serial killer.

When not writing, what can you be found doing?

 Grading papers, cleaning house, gardening

Favorite item of clothing in your closet?

I guess my bathing suit, not because of how I look in it, but because I really like to swim.

If you could spend the day with any celebrity, who would it be?

I think Tom Hanks would be fun.

 Favorite writer, book?

Oh man, way to many. To Kill a Mockingbird, Pride and Prejudice, Gray Mountain. I really like court cases.

When writing, which do you prefer to write with, computer or paper and pen?

Both and whatever is handy at the moment!

Thanks for being with us today Katherine, you are certainly a muli-faceted woman. Best wishes.

Excerpt from Hiding

Alex illuminated the crypt
with his light, and Teresa tried to interpret what she saw: uneven walls, a doorway surrounded by orbs, a floor littered with dried reeds. No, they weren’t reeds; they were bones. And the orbs were skulls! The catacombs! Her heart pounded in her chest like a jackhammer. Alex had withdrawn his knife. The blade glittered in the dim light of the torch which cast luminous shadows on the walls. What better place to kill someone? What was another set of bones among the many? Lord, as you helped the Christians long ago who met secretly in catacombs, help me.

Why I Wrote Hiding?

Unfortunately, many women in modern society experience dating abuse as does Teresa Worthington in Hiding. Teresa learns to stand up for herself and gain independence by successfully pursuing a talent for painting. The idea for the story literally started with a “blank canvas” the brick and stucco back wall of a courtyard behind a Parisian hotel. This wall just tempted the imagination and invited creativity.
Because, like my character, I also like to paint murals, I wanted to pursue the idea of creating beauty out of bare bricks.
