Author Interview- Rebel Miller

Woohoo, it's Saturday!!! I hope you're all having a great weekend.
Today I have author Rebel Miller visiting the blog for the first time. Please welcome her as she answers a few questions and shares her new book, Promising: Book 2 of Kira's Story, with us. Be sure to read through, as Rebel is offering a Rafflecopter Giveaway you know you'll want to enter.

Welcome Rebel, thank you for being here today. Please start by tell us three words that describe yourself starting with A, B, and C.
Astute
Boundless
Candid

What are your three favorite things?
Easy. My MacBook Air laptop, Pinot Grigio wine and caramel popcorn - in that order!

Are you self-published or with a publishing company (if so, which one?)?
I’m self-published under my own company, Rebel Miller Books.

Is there a process you stick to, or do you just write as it hits you?
I do both.  Writing for an author is a compulsion and if an idea hits, I pull out my phone, laptop or iPad to jot down the notes. Sometimes entire dialogue comes through or a word that I was trying to remember pops into my head. My best ideas come when I’m in the shower or just about to fall asleep. I think most writers experience the same thing. It’s something about being in that relaxed state of mind, not as intensely focused, that allows inspiration to flow.
Having said that, I believe in developing a writing schedule and routine. My process involves heading into my home office or to my local library to write. To get started, I read a Muse meditation I wrote to get me into the right head space and plug in my headphones. Have music, will write! I cannot write without music playing! It sets the mood for me and the repetition of the tracks keep me focused.

Was there any particular inspiration for your characters or story?
I was in the middle of binge-reading New Adult romances when I decided how to develop this series. I loved the idea of creating a coming-of-age story, but one that was out of this world - literally! The challenge I set for myself was to create a world set hundreds of years in the future that would allow the female lead, Kira, to confront a number of dramatic and emotional challenges while hitting the right thematic notes in terms of an angst-filled New Adult romance. Kira has to make difficult decisions with regards to the love triangle she finds herself in as well as her budding career, her family, peers and friends. As for Gannon and Tai, the two male leads in the aforementioned love triangle, I wanted to establish alpha-males who had their own emotional challenges and career ambitions, which determine how their characters grow and influence how they demonstrate their love for Kira.

Will there be more books in your series, or can you tell us about any previous books?
Yes, there will be more books in The Realm Series, and I cannot wait to get started on writing them! Right now, I’m well underway with writing the third book in the series. This novel will be the last instalment for Kira’s story. I’ll then step away from the series to work on a stand-alone contemporary romantic suspense novel. After that, I’ll return to The Realm Series to write the story of Liandra, another female character who we first met in Awakening.
At this point, I think there’ll be five books in total for The Realm Series, but you never know. I’m having a lot of fun with it and readers seem to enjoy them as much as I do!

When not writing, what can you be found doing?
Watching movies (I ADORE movies!!!), taking my two boys (nine and four years old) to soccer practice, teaching public relations to college students, doing freelance communications for non-profit organizations or chatting with readers through social media. Oh yeah, I try to spend time with my hubby somewhere in the middle of all that! Whew! Yep, my life’s as hectic as it sounds!

When writing, which do you prefer to write with, computer or paper and pen?
To be honest, I use multiple devices: laptop, iPad, phone and paper and pen. I guess which I prefer though depends on what I’m writing. I prefer to use my phone and iPad to write down inspiration ideas or plot points. However, I love to sketch out notes for my chapter outline with paper and pen. The laptop is where I hunker down to write the rough draft through to the final copy. Ideas and the compulsion to write comes anywhere and at any time, so I have to have access to some sort of writing implement!

Promising: Book Two of Kira’s Story

PROMISING, the riveting follow-up to AWAKENING by Rebel Miller.

Faced with diverging loyalties — between those she loves and her responsibility to the Realm — Kira has to make heartrending and strategic decisions that threaten to jeopardize her future.

As her connection to Tai deepens and turmoil in the Realm builds, so does Gannon’s frustration at being unable to call Kira his own.

Worlds at War ... A Heart in Conflict

While the Realm stands defiant amidst rising unrest, Kira is thrust into a role that puts her at the forefront of her system’s governance and law, supporting a landmark position. Following a devastating turn of events, she turns to Tai for a shoulder to lean on after making a painful choice to ensure Gannon fulfils the role he was meant for.

As she becomes a reluctant - yet inspiring - voice for her caste, Kira learns about one of the Realm’s most well-kept secrets and how far leadership will go to prevent it from being revealed. What she doesn’t know is how much the decisions of her past have the power to bring enemies into her path, threatening to destroy everyone she holds close to her heart.

This novel is for mature audiences (18+) and includes committed relationships with multiple partners.

Excerpt

“How is it that with all our system’s technology I can’t make love to you from thousands of light years away?”
I snorted, but my lips tilted up at the corners nevertheless. “I’m sure the Protectorate has some sort of virtual reality device that could be refashioned just for that purpose,” I offered, rearranging the wool blanket on my lap.
I was curled up in bed, facing my monitor and resting against a pile of pillows. It had become a familiar position over the last few weeks, one from which I would relay the day’s activities during my nightly call with Gannon. Well, it was a nightly call for me. The sun had already risen where Gannon lived, on Dignitas One.
Suddenly, Gannon seemed to be deep in concentration. “No, on second thought, there’s no technology that could ever measure up to the real thing.” He grinned.
I smiled, heat rising to my cheeks.
“There’s the smile I was looking for,” Gannon said, leaning closer to his monitor, and so closer to me.
He was sitting in his office. He had been holding our calls from there more frequently over the last month. From what I could see, his office was a large, well-lit space. A wall of floor-to-ceiling glass ran its expanse directly behind him. Through it, I could see citizens of every caste striding by in obvious haste to get things done, more than likely at Gannon’s bidding. During these nighttime conversations with Gannon, and within the intimate surroundings of my bedroom, it was easy to forget who he was and his status. As chancellor, he surely had, every day, a checklist as long as my arm, filled with tasks.
I frowned as I noted the time. “I should let you go,” I said, sitting up.
“Why?”
I glanced pointedly behind him, fiddling with the thin strap of my top. “Your office looks incredibly busy.”
He blinked then swiveled in his chair to look at the steady stream of people behind him.
“Oh, my support always look like that,” he said, mischief glittering in his clear blue eyes as he turned back to me. “They think it’ll prevent me asking them to do anything else.” He winked, and I laughed, loving his cheekiness.
